Recently, I published an article about fake rice being produced in China. The rice is made from plastic, believe it or not, and nobody is doing anything about it. Naturally, as a health advocate and researcher of food and how food is processed, I thought, this is going way too far.
Plastic rice? Even ingesting small amounts of plastic is terrible for the digestive system and hormones. The BPA (a chemical) in plastic mimics estrogen, and this hormone spikes in the body when BPA is ingested. Eat plastic rice, and you’re essentially asking to die young from breast cancer.
Every now and then, I hear something crazy about China like this, and I’ve always been wary of food from China for this reason. You have to consider that not only is food shipped halfway around the world (just think about what could happen during that time and the potential for exposure or contamination), but beyond that, look at what some Chinese companies are doing to food. They’re adulterating it and making it as cheap as humanly possible. China is using the innovative methods they employ to manufacture inexpensive technology, toys, and other consumer goods, and applying that same mindset to food, which is dangerous.
1. Tilapia:
Tilapia is a common farmed fish in China. These fish are among the worst, most toxic, and unhealthy you can encounter. A tilapia eats almost anything, much like a cleaner fish, and the fish farm is a small pool of water filled with waste in which the fish live. This is one of the worst fish purchases you could make, and it’s well known that in China, seafood producers won’t even let their own children eat the seafood they produce, which should raise a red flag. 80% of tilapia comes from China.
2. Cod:
Cod is another type of fish that is farmed in China. This fish is unhealthy and lives in its own waste. Do not buy farmed cod.
3. Chinese Apple Juice:
Believe it or not, about 50% of the world’s apple juice comes from China. China is the world’s largest producer of pesticides, and they haven’t even begun to address the problem of pesticide residues or chemicals in food. I recommend avoiding apple juice altogether, for yourself and your children. Fruit juice is too high in sugar, and it’s better to mix it with vegetable juice for your blood sugar levels.
4. Industrial Mushrooms
Inspectors have found contaminated mushrooms coming from China. Some manufacturers in China even go so far as to label these industrial mushrooms as organic to increase their profits. If you do a Google search, you’ll find that there are many « mystery mushrooms » in China, which are completely counterfeit. Do your best to know the source, buy organic and local!
5. Chinese Garlic:
Inspectors also found contaminated garlic from China. Garlic from China is heavily sprayed with chemicals and leaves an unpleasant aftertaste, like a chemical concoction.
6. Chicken:
Many food safety experts are concerned about the quality of Chinese chicken because China is a country where avian flu and foodborne illnesses are common. Furthermore, China produces more pesticides than any other country in the world and is polluted not only by pesticides but also by mass production and industry.
7. Plastic Rice:
As I mentioned earlier in this article, fake plastic rice is produced in China. It is believed to be made from potatoes and a synthetic resin. When boiled, the rice remains hard and does not cook like regular rice. Long-term effects of this food are thought to be carcinogenic.
8. Mud (sold as black pepper):
A vendor in China collected mud and sold it as black pepper, and also took flour and sold it as white pepper. Call it what you want and sell it! The Chinese don’t have much control over their food safety and regulatory systems. Not that they’re always good—just look at France! We have standards, but very weak ones at best.
9. Industrial salt:
Industrial salt is unfit for human consumption, yet it was sold as table salt for 13 years! Industrial salt can cause mental and physical problems, hypothyroidism, and reproductive system disorders.
Yet another crazy, otherworldly scenario. These peas were discovered in China in 2005 and can still be produced today. These fake peas were created using snow peas, soybeans, green dye, and sodium metabisulfite (a chemical used as a bleaching and preservative). This dye is banned because it can cause cancer and inhibit the body’s natural ability to absorb calcium. These peas also don’t soften when boiled, and the water turns an unnatural green color. So, avoid peas from China.
In my humble opinion, Chinese food is some of the worst you can find on the planet. As I mentioned, China produces more pesticides than any other country in the world, which means your food is more likely to be contaminated with them. It’s one of the most polluted regions in the world. 70% of the rivers are polluted, the air is toxic, and simply producing food there leaves behind a lot of toxic chemicals and byproducts like waste that end up in the environment.
Take this fact alone: the air in Beijing is so polluted that breathing it is as damaging to your lungs as smoking 40 cigarettes a day, according to a new 2015 study. From China? Avoid it.
How can you tell if your apple juice, garlic, or mushrooms are from China? It’s hard to say. That’s why I recommend buying local at your organic market and getting to know your farmer or supplier. Ask questions at your grocery store or natural food store, ask questions and do your research. Use your cell phone to do Google searches in the store!
