Doctor issues urgent vape warning after 17-year-old develops irreversible ‘popcorn lung’ from popular habit

A recent case has highlighted the severe risks of vaping among teenagers. Brianne Cullen, a 17-year-old high school cheerleader from Nevada, was diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as “popcorn lung,” after secretly vaping for three years. This chronic and irreversible lung condition causes shortness of breath, wheezing, and fatigue. Brianne began vaping at age 14 to cope with anxiety following the COVID-19 lockdown. In January, during cheerleading practice, she experienced difficulty breathing and was rushed to the hospital. Her mother, Christine Martin, was unaware of her vaping habit and is now advocating for awareness about the dangers of youth vaping .

“Popcorn lung” is a rare form of irreversible obstructive lung disease that scars the smallest airways in the lung—the bronchioles—and makes it difficult for air to flow. The disease was so named because it was first discovered in workers at a microwave popcorn plant who inhaled diacetyl, a chemical used to create a buttery flavor. Research has found that many e-liquid vaping flavors contain diacetyl, which can cause similar lung damage when inhaled .

In another case, a Canadian teenager developed a vaping-related lung injury similar to “popcorn lung” after vaping flavored e-liquids and regularly adding THC to his vaping fluid. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he spent 47 days in the hospital, narrowly avoiding the need for a double lung transplant. Doctors suspect that the flavoring agents in the e-liquids contributed to the lung damage .

These cases underscore the serious health risks associated with vaping, especially among young people. Health experts warn that vaping can lead to irreversible lung damage and other health complications. Parents are urged to be vigilant and proactive in preventing their children from vaping, stressing the serious health risks involved

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain after vaping, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Early intervention can help manage symptoms and prevent further lung damage.
