Confronted by her 7-year-old daughter's murderer, a mother pulls out a gun and shoots him dead in the middle of the trial

Can we judge a broken mother who chooses to take justice into her own hands? This is the question still raised, more than 40 years after the events, by the tragic story of Marianne Bachmeier, the German mother who killed, in open court, the man accused of murdering her daughter. A drama of rare intensity, which continues to divide public opinion.

The tragedy that started it all

It all began in May 1980 in Lübeck, Germany. Marianne, a single mother, was raising her seven-year-old daughter Ana alone. An argument between them led the little girl to stay home from school that day. A seemingly insignificant event… which would nevertheless lead to irreparable consequences.

Ana was abducted by a neighbor,  35-year-old Klaus Grabowski ,  who had a prior conviction for sexual assault . He held her captive in his home for several hours,  then strangled her.  Ana's body was later found hidden in a cardboard box.

A troubled past and a radical gesture

For Marianne, the pain is immeasurable. The accused man is  a known repeat offender , and in her opinion,  he should never have been released.

But what pushes her to the limit are the statements made by the accused during the trial. Not only does he deny the sexual assault, but he  insinuates that Ana tried to seduce him.  For Marianne, these words are unbearable.

On March 6, 1981, she took action.

On the day of the hearing, she  concealed a firearm in her bag.  In the courtroom, while Klaus Grabowski sat a few feet away, she pulled out the pistol and fired  seven shots.  He died instantly. The courtroom was in shock. Marianne was immediately arrested.

In the hours that followed,  the case shocked all of Germany.  Some portrayed her as  a courageous mother pushed to the limit , others called her a criminal. But  no one remained indifferent.

A divisive conviction

In 1983, Marianne was sentenced to  six years in prison for voluntary homicide , but she was released after  three years of detention.

A poll conducted several years later shows how divided the country remains:

  • 28%  felt the sentence was appropriate
  • 27%  consider it too heavy
  • 25%  find it too light

A life marked by injuries

Marianne's life had been difficult long before this tragedy. Her father was a member of the  Waffen-SS , and she herself had experienced violence in her childhood and several  early pregnancies.  Ana, her third daughter, was the first she had chosen to raise alone.

Her action, which she would later acknowledge as premeditated, was, according to her, a way  to protect her daughter's memory.  In 1995, she stated in an interview:

"I wanted to stop him from lying about my daughter again."

What remains of this story today?

Marianne Bachmeier died in 1996. Her actions continue to fuel debate,  inspiring documentaries, films, and societal reflections.  For behind this news story lies a universal question:  how far can one go for love of one's child?

It is a story of pain, personal justice, anger… and a mother who  was never able to recover from what was taken from her.

And what would you do if it were your child?
